An integral part of Harvard University Global System® (HUGS), these tools speed-up the preparation of negotiation and help reduce the uncertainty facing negotiators, mediators, arbitrators, project managers, bankers, diplomats and other professionals, be they tackling big-ticket items or day-to-day negotiation work. Subjected to extensive field tests, HUGS templates are potent brainstorming tools to invent options for mutual gains, and anticipate and manage frequently neglected risks.

Harvard® Negotiation-Mandate Definition (Code 45N)
is the first in a set of three practical
instruments used to plan and conduct principled negotiations.
This two-page document provides a step-by-step template to define the
scope of the negotiation from the perspective of each party. A clear
mandate means valid goals and deliverables, adequate resources and a
sound evaluation system with objectively verifiable standards and
performance indicators. The tool includes a framework to make grey
areas explicit, and to identify and manage both initial and residual
risks related to the conditions beyond the control of each negotiating
party. Complete one document for each side involved, including key stakeholders
in multipartite negotiations. The tool is almost identical to Harvard® Project-Scope
Definition Tool (Code 45A). |
Harvard® Negotiation-Strategy Tool
is a creativity instrument that helps negotiators
invent and explore a complete panorama of strategic choices with less guesswork.
This two-page brainstorming checklist widens the window through which opportunities
are viewed. With it, you can organize your thinking process and break down
the barriers to innovation – at every step in the negotiation value chain. Even
when the strategy is clear, its execution can be fraught with perils. That is
why the tool also provides a step-by-step scenario to help users reduce
implementation risks, turn resistance to change into constructive engagement,
and mitigate residual risks and collateral damage. The tool is almost identical to
Harvard® Project Strategy: Team-Brainstorming Board (Code 55A). |
Harvard® Responsibility & Accountability Chart (Code 60A)
is a widely used governance and accountability instrument and highly recommended by negotiators,
auditors and project managers alike.
It helps users brainstorm and assign clear roles as well as validate accountability
in a team and to spot early signs of delays.
The second page provides a step-by-step scenario to identify risks
specifically related to responsibility and veto. Thus, users can act early to redress the situation.

These practical instruments help project managers and their clients develop work plans, structure teams and control progress. They provide a systematic approach to define project focus, scope and strategy, identify deliverables, set key milestones, assign tasks and clarify everyone's role, manage risk and take control of change. They enhance the productivity of managers and professionals. HUGS management templates are proven fact-finding tools to rigorously investigate untapped opportunities, reduce collateral damage, and anticipate surprise events and other sources of project delays and cost overruns.
